にわかがおすすめするスラッシュ・メタル・アルバムの第500回です。
このアルバム紹介も500回目を迎えました。
キリの良い数字の時は、METALLICA、SLAYER、MEGADETHやANTHRAXのスラッシュ・メタル・ビッグ4のバンドの記事を書いていますが、今回はMEGADETHのアルバムです。
今回紹介するのは、アメリカのバンドMEGADETHのPeace Sells… But Who’s Buying?です。

アルバム・ジャケットは、Ed Repkaが手掛けています。
国内盤は、レコードが1986年11月1日にCapitol Records（多分、レーベルは違います）からリリースされました。
国内盤CDは、1987年5月1日にToshiba EMIからリリースされました。

7曲目の「I Ain’t Superstitious」は、著名なブルース・ミュージシャンのWillie Dixonのカバー曲です。
そして、この曲は、ホンダの車のCMに使用されていました。
1曲目の「Wake Up Dead」と3曲目の「Peace Sells」は、ミュージック・ビデオが作られました。
MEGADETHは2枚目のアルバム紹介です。
最初は、デビュー・アルバムのKilling Is My Business… And Business Is Good!でした。
今回記事を書いているPeace Sells… But Who’s Buying?は、MEGADETHのアルバムで2枚目に購入した作品です。
最初に買ったのは、3枚目のアルバムSo Far, So Good… So What!ですが、このアルバムを聴いて、すぐにMEGADETHを気に入りました。
そして、遡って買ったのが、Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?です。
So Far, So Good… So What!も良かったのですが、Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?は更に良かったです。
特に、ミュージック・ビデオになった「Wake Up Dead」と「Peace Sells」が気に入りました。
後は、収録時間が約37分と聴きやすい長さだったのも良かったです。
当時は、「インテレクチュアル・スラッシュ・メタル」という部分が強調されていて、他のスラッシュ・メタル・バンドとは差別化されていた記憶があります。
「インテレクチュアル・スラッシュ・メタル」とは、複雑な展開の楽曲のことを指しているものと理解しています。
自分は複雑な展開の楽曲が苦手でしたが、初めて聴いた時にも苦手さを感じることはありませんでした。
今でもすんなり聴くことができています。
それは、やはり曲が良いからだと思います。
MEGADETHのアルバムで一番最初に聴いて欲しい作品です。
個人的にはそう思っています。
そんなPeace Sells… But Who’s Buying?ですが、いろいろなバージョンでのリリースがあります。
自分が所有しているものだけ書いていきます。
まずは、2003年10月14日にCapitol RecordsからリリースされたDVDオーディオ・ディスクです。

4曲目の「Devil’s Island」は、異なるバージョンが収録されています。
次に、2004年7月27日にCapitol Recordsからリリースされたリミックスとリマスター・バージョンです。
アルバム・ジャケットには変更はありません。
このCDの思い出は、国内盤がコピー・コントロールCDでリリースされるために、輸入盤を探し回ったことです。
自分は何とか輸入盤を購入することができて、コピー・コントロールCDを回避することができました。
ちなみに、コピー・コントロールCDとは、主にパソコンでの取り込みやデジタル・コピーを防ぐ目的で作られたCDのことです。
このCDは、Randy Burns Mixとして、4曲がボーナス曲として収録されています。
なので、全12曲収録で、収録時間は約56分です。
輸入盤も国内盤も収録内容は同じです。

また、スラッシュ・メタルでも最初に聴いて欲しいアルバムのひとつです。
